KOMBUCHA A DAY, KEEPS THE DOCTOR AWAY – Health benefits of this magical beverage

KOMBUCHA – Pronounced ‘kuhm-boo-chuh’ (I think)

Or me and my friends just like to call it ‘booch’!

Firstly, what the hell is kombucha?  

It’s a fermented tea that is created by a SCOBY (symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast) that you feed sugar and tea.  It is full of probiotics and is usually flavored to taste. Maybe I’ll write about this process some more another day, because how it’s made is actually very interesting and you can do it yourself!

To be honest, I can’t even really remember who introduced me to the drink.  It was probably my older sister, who tends to introduce me to a lot of different health things, as she is an even bigger health nut than me!

But I’m always down to try a new health thing.  It was bubbly, it had a cool bottle with a quote on it (I love quotes), and it had all these cool flavors with also healthy ingredients.  Drank it and I liked it!

Then I noticed that other health-conscious individuals also had an affinity for kombucha.  People I considered to be the epitome of health in my eyes. So I’m like, hell ya – I’ll keep slurping it down.

Then I started learning more about it too and realizing all the great health benefits its provides our bodies!  

As this drink is still kind of a new thing, there isn’t a ton of research on it, but here is what I’ve found, based on the following sources that seem to be credible (a.k.a. Doctors, nutritionists, etc).  


1. It contains polyphenols.

These are naturally occurring chemicals found in plants and have proved in studies to be powerful antioxidants that lower your cholesterol and blood pressure, among improving your life span and artery function.  These also help prevent all sorts of illnesses and improve gut health.

2. It contains probiotic bacteria.

Probiotics have become more and more popular as people learn how their gut health actually effects a lot of the functions of their body and a their mental health.  By providing health bacteria in the gut, it can help with diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and your overall immune system.

3. It could reduce cancer risk.

A couple of studies cited in the Medical News Today article show that kombucha decreased the survival of cancer cells in a test tube.  Now I’m not saying its the cure for cancer, but it does seem to help prevent it or at least reduce your risk.

4. The acetic acid produced when fermented helps kill harmful bacteria.

Since it is harmful bacteria that lead to most infections, then perhaps kombucha reduces your risk of infection by consuming this acid.   Less infections = less sick = better life & health! Yay acetic acid!

5.  Improves mental health.

Studies have connected our gut health to mental health time and time again – especially depression.   Inflammation is linked to depression and since many of the elements in Kombucha are anti-inflammatory, then maybe it’s safe to say that kombucha can actually make you happier.  It sure does for me 🙂

6. Helps improve liver health.

This goes back to those amazing antioxidants that booch has.  These reduce toxins that are found in the liver, therefore helping its overall health and decreasing any inflammation in the liver.   I find that a kombucha HITS THE SPOT after I happen to have a few drinks the night before. Maybe this has something to do with it. Or I just love it.  Or both. But yay for liver detox!

7. Reduces heart disease risk.

Studies on kombucha with rats have shown that it reduces the ‘bad’ LDL cholesterol and improves the ‘good’ HDL cholesterol, ultimately reducing risk for heart disease.  

And with heart disease being one of the leading causes of death in the US, maybe kombucha could help reduce this statistic in humans!  I’d say it’s worth a shot.

8. Helps with Type 2 Diabetes.

Another study with kombucha found that it helped manage blood sugar levels.  Again, this was with rats and not humans.

But it also has small amounts of natural sugars, so I feel that this drink could help ween people off of other sugary drinks like sodas that cause Type 2 Diabetes!  

9. May be linked to weight loss.

Some are made with green tea, which studies have shown that this extract has aided with burning more calories.  

I personally believe that it helps with weight loss, just from my own experience!  The bubbly drink seems to curb my hunger at times and I’ll just say it outright – it helps you poop!  Yay, probiotics! Happy bowels, happy body, happy mind = the right environment for your body to shed any unwanted weight you may have.

Now I’m not saying I’m an expert or doctor.  And none of the above is proved by the FDA, but I just speak from my own experience and what other very smart people are finding.  




What Are Kombucha’s Health Benefits (and How Much Can You Safely Drink)?

But I mean, don’t take my word for it, do your own research!  And maybe that includes trying out the drink for yourself!

While staying with my grandparents in Florida, they commented on my energy levels all the time.  I don’t know if its from the kombucha, but I definitely had one every day. I even got the big one once to save money.

By the end of the first week, they were curious enough to try out some kombucha themselves!  I don’t necessarily think they enjoyed the experience, but it was cool to see them opening up to the fizzy weird drink.  

I would come back from the beach and say, “ IT’S BOOCH TIME!”  and then they would say, “BOOCH TIME!” back to me. That alone kind of made my whole trip.

For those of you who like soda, it also may be a good substitute, because it is also carbonated and has a little bit of natural sugar in it.   Plus, I don’t think your soda does all the following above health benefits for ya. 😉 Just sayin.

The main brand you see most places is GT’s Kombucha, but there are many brands coming out with new ones now!  You choose which one is best for you, but watch out because some brands add a lot more added sugars!

I enjoy the earthier flavors that include other healthy ingredients that I know are good for your body.  For example, my GT’s Kombucha favorites:

TANTRIC TURMERIC – includes turmeric which has large anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects on the body.

GINGERADE  – includes ginger which aids in digestion, nausea, cold/flu relief, and inflammation.

MULTI-GREEN – includes blue-green algae, spirulina, & chorella

  • All of these ingredients I have heard have INCREDIBLE health effects, being prescribed to people with illnesses such as Lyme’s Disease or Cancer

But really, there are tons of flavors out there.  For those just getting into it, maybe try with some sweeter flavors first!  Such as:





It is a bit of an acquired taste because of the vinegar in the drinks, but like anything, if you drink or eat anything enough, you kind of get used it! I’m sure you can find a flavor you love, there are loads! Sometimes I drink it out of a wine glass too, to class up the experience a bit 🙃
